The design for The First Arabian Night is going really well. Today Heather Dineen and I finished the giant quilt which covers the stage. It consists of 12 double duvet quilts sewn together after they have been dyed a beautiful yellow ochre. Next we will be sewing thousands of sequins on to it...

The Long Mirror

This image is of my design for JB Priestley's The Long Mirror

which I designed for the main house in Theatr Clwyd, North Wales. The set comprised a circular room set with a wrap around cyclorama which depicted the Snowdonia mountain range. The play is set in an hotel which is sited at the foot of Snowdon.

The landscape becomes an oppressive presence as the story within the play becomes more established.

My latest design for The First Arabian Night

This is a computer modelled image of my latest design for The First Arabian Night, which will be staged at The Arts University College in late 2010. I have been working with Dr Ian Stephenson from Bournemouth University. Ian has developed an amazing new computer modelling software package called Stage Builder which can help designers to design their sets, light them and walk around the performance space...amazing stuff! This technology has been really useful to use in the planning of this project which is to be directed by Sean Aita.

Three steps to heaven at Watford Palace Theatre

I was inspired within this design by my fascination with Hawaiian shirt textiles and classic American diner iconography. The director, Clifford Milner and I wanted the space to look clean and streamlined to reflect the surreal nature of the piece....after all who knows what Heaven looks like?

I used collage here to suggest the unreality of the world for these characters. Also, the mirrors on this design suggested the vanity of the character.

The Three Penny Opera at The Arts Institute at Bournemouth.

Mac the Knife wore this pinstripe suit. The interesting design detail was that the lining suggested his evil, murderous nature.....with his name surrounded with blood stains.

The director featured this element in the choreography of the scene. It was a simple device , but it was quite unsettling for the audience when the lining was revealed.

This image is of the final design for Jenny. She wore a black gaberdine coat over her red dress.

This was for the scene with Mac in the street when she sings the "Pirate Jenny" number.

The Whore House!

I deliberately designed the shirts to be super vibrant. This style suited the "musical" element of the production and was clearly influenced by the heightened reality of the German Expressionist artists that I had seen.

This design was inspired by an Otto Dix painting.

The dress is made of satin backed crepe and scattered with sequins.
